Statement
of Intent
My aim in
this project is to explore and investigate the different forms of
tension (Visual, Aural and dramatic). I will use the
techniques that I discover and learn throughout this project to make
the audience feel/see the tension themselves when viewing my work. I
plan on working in film and performance for this project.
Visual:
To explore the visual side of tension I will experiment with the use
of colour and speed. Tension in film can be created (speed-wise) by
slowing footage down – this is mostly done to drag out the climax
of a narrative in order to create suspense for the viewer. Another
method that is commonly used through slowing the footage down is to
build suspense and tension as if building towards a climax, but then
take the visuals away from the narrative. I would also like to experiment with
Aural:
The use of accompaniment is a popular choice when creating tension.
The more successful tracks tend to be the ones more centered around
the bass or drums, however, a piano and violin with heavy reverb can
have a similar effect. Music is used to create tension by enhancing
the visuals seen on screen.
Dramatic:
A dramatic tool used by many theatre practitioners is the '7 levels
of tension'. These are seven levels of increasing intensity.
1).
Motionless
2).
Relaxed
3).
Neutral
4).
Alert
5).
Suspense
6).
Passionate
7).
Tragic
By
splitting this project into three section I am able to focus on
investigating each specific 'version' of tension. This structure will also help
the viewer navigate through the work in a guided order whilst slowly
building and understanding of tension. I will be combining the three elements of tension in all of my films but focusing on one or two effect in each.
